Western Electric 197GS Unusual Gauge loc R2-1
Western Electric 197GS, 10 cent automatic prepay payphone or paystation. This antique telephone has a coin gauge found on a few that came from Chicago, use of slugs was a problem there. The coin gauge is larger than a normal one, it has magnets in it to attract slugs and keep them from dripping into the phone. A special coin chute is used as well. The 197 is the first of Western Electric's models to be fitted with a coin return bucket and a coin return button.
